One of the many topics I find myself mulling over more than most involves digital versus printed books.  Recently, my largely un-scientific hunches got a boost of validation when I listened to UCLA Education Professor and children’s literacy advocate Maryanne Wolf share her thoughts on the matter in an Ezra Klein podcast about The Power of the Deep Read.

It was news to me that, according to Wolf, the human brain was never meant to read.  Reading is an entirely “unnatural”  human invention that engages parts of the brain that were originally meant for other purposes, and adapts them to this thing called reading.

Last month, the Builders Club officers went to the Humane Society of Pasadena to drop off the dog toys and cat beds that the members had made during some of their meetings.

Another volunteer activity that Builders Club recently participated in was helping to decorate the South Pasadena Rose Parade float. The club collaborated with Kiwanis South Pasadena.

Finally, earlier in the year, this charitable club made coloring books for the patients at Shriners Children’s Hospital. While the officers were trying to plan an activity they could do to benefit a children’s hospital, they realized how bored patients become in waiting rooms. So, the club decided to make Fall themed coloring books, and provide some entertainment for the children in the hospital.

All of Builders Club wishes everyone a happy holiday season, and they hope to see some new faces in their club after New Years!

On May 19, 2023, SPMS 8th graders are invited to celebrate their promotion by sharing a night of fun and excitement with all of their 8th Grade friends at Universal Studios Hollywood! Please note this event will be in place of the traditional end of the year 8th Grade Promotion Party.
