How to Talk to Your Kids and Survive

Raising a child is probably the most gratifying job any of us will ever have, and also one of the toughest. In large part, this is because times have changed. We live in an increasingly complex world that challenges us every day with a wide range of disturbing issues that are difficult for children to understand and for adults to explain. Today’s children are part of the iGen or Gen Z generation, the generation born in the age of smartphones and tablets. Presented by Jennifer Fightlin.

 REFLECTIONS UPDATE
BY MARTY FREEMAN (REFLECTIONS CHAIR)

Congratulations to Noel English and Mateo Salas for being awarded 2nd place in their respective fields of artistry at this year’s First District PTA Reflections competition 2022-2023.

Noel received an Award of Excellence in music composition for composing and performing her piece, Broken Loudspeaker (listen to the song here).  The song with amazing vocals, presentation and interpretation expressed the theme of “Show Your Voice”, by sharing the importance of speaking your opinion even in the struggle that individuals may have doing so.

Mateo received an Award of Excellence in Photography for his piece, Out of Time. The photograph showed a Joshua Tree scorched by wildfires provoking the thought, ‘will our generation be a solution to environmental concerns?’’ What should we do now to “Show Our Voice” and change before it is too late.

Out of Time by Mateo Salas

Congratulations to our fabulous artists and their artistic works for making an impact and sharing with our world how artistry speaks.

 MPACT PERFORMANCE RECAP
BY GINA LOYONNET (MUSIC BOOSTERS)

Students were treated to a unique cultural assembly held last Wednesday featuring m-pact, an acapella pop-jazz vocal group based in Los Angeles. M-pact held a masterclass with the Advanced Choir students who sang some of their repertoire and received positive feedback and training on vocal technique.

Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 attended the performance. M-pact conveyed a message to students to pursue something that you love. For the M-pact singers, they had a life changing experience where they saw music as a vital part of their lives and a cool way to use music to make a living.  SPMS Choir teacher Wylder Reinman organized the assembly with the support of SPMS PTA, ASB and Music Boosters, and encourages students to express themselves through singing. For information on SPMS choir classes, contact Reinman at wreinman@spusd.net
