There are many ways to be involved at SPMS. Our events and programs would not happen without the time, dedication, and hard work of our fabulous volunteers. If you or another member of your household or family would like to help out, please complete the form below. 6th Grade Transition (Year Round) - Be a resource for 6th grade parents and incoming 6th grade parents, help plan 6th Grade Parent Orientation (August) and 5th Grade Parent Night (January), help facilitate communication with and community building events for incoming 6th graders.

8th Grade Activities (Year Round) - Help plan the following 8th grade activities and programs: Winter Formal (January), Grad Night (May), Promotion Ceremony (second to last day of school), and 9th Grade Breakfast (last day of school). In some years, this role may also require planning additional fundraisers to support these programs. Student groups handle many of the aspects of these programs. PTA is mainly only responsible for providing food/drinks, ordering rentals, and providing volunteers support where needed.

Athletics Programs Support (Year Round) - Support the SPMS Athletics Booster Club by volunteering to help sell merchandise, refreshments, etc, or any other needs that arise. Your information will be shared with the Athletic Boosters.

Book Fair & Book Swap (Nov/Dec/Jan) - Help staff and/or help plan and coordinate the annual book fair (online and/or in-person).

Community Service/Outreach (TBD) - Help plan and coordinate activities that allow SPMS students to engage with the greater South Pasadena community and promote connection through volunteerism.

Follies (Mar) - Help plan, staff, or perform in our biggest and most hilarious fundraiser of the year, a variety show for the whole family featuring SPMS parents and school staff. All proceeds benefit the Wellness Center & mental health programs. There are several areas where you can help out: recruitment & coordination of talent (or lack thereof), writing skits & parody songs, publicizing the event, stage production, lighting, sound, props, hospitality, selling sponsorships & creating a program, hosting/mc, recruiting & managing backstage volunteers, performing original acts or acts that are written for you or a group, etc. See last year's show on YouTube!

Grant Writing (Year Round) - Help staff write grants to access financial assistance through companies and foundations.

Graphic Design & Social Media (Year Round) - Be a resource for designing logos, flyers, spirit wear, posters, soical media posts, etc. for PTA or Boosters Club events.

Honorary Service Awards (May) - Help organize the annual school service appreciation luncheon and awards ceremony.

Hospitality & Staff Appreciation (Year Round) - Donate refreshments, supplies, or decor for Staff Appreciation & PTA events; help with setup & cleanup for these events, and/or help implement Staff Appreciation Week (May).

Ice Cream Sales (Year Round) - Help with after school ice cream and popsicles sales to raise money for 8th grade activities and promotion.

Library/Media Center Support (Year Round) - Extend the reach of limited staff by helping in the library/media center during the school day with student supervision and administrative tasks.

Lost & Found (As Needed) - Help organize and return lost items. Help organize donation of items a few times a year.

Mental Health Week (Oct) - Help implement this week of hands-on activities designed to help our young people and destigmatize mental health (takes place during national Red Ribbon Week in late October).

Music Program Support (Year Round) - Support the SPMS Music Booster Club by volunteering to help with their programs and fundraising. Your information will be shared with the Music Boosters.

Parent Education (TBD) - Help plan and organize parent education programs on relevant adolescent subjects such as mental health, social media and bullying; and/or donate your professional expertise as a presenter or panelist, if applicable.

PE Uniforms & Locks Distribution (Aug) - Help distribute PE uniforms & locks.

Reflections & Art (Fall) - Help plan, implement, or judge the National PTA Reflections art contest and art show. Contest categories include visual art, photography, music composition, dance choreography, film, and literature. Follow artists that advance beyond local competition and communicate their accomplishments via PTA announcements. If you are interested in supporting other art-related needs at SPMS, please also check this option.

Spring Musical (Spring) - Help the drama program with the spring musical if the need for parent volunteers arises.

Student Programs (TBD) - Work with our VP of Programs to help envision, plan and organize PTA programs for students such as assemblies and student enrichment programs.

Translators/Language Support (Year Round) - Provide support for non-English speaking families (including sign language). Your information will be provided to the SPMS administration, main office staff, teachers, and counselors.

Vision & Hearing Screening (TBD) - Help organize students on annual screening days.

Volunteer Expectations

✓ As an on-campus volunteer, I agree to sign in at the Main Office and obtain a volunteer tag. For safety purposes, this will enable staff and students to identify me as a school volunteer.
✓ I realize that my attendance is important and I will make every attempt to give 24 hours notice if I am unable to fulfill my commitment.
✓ I agree to maintain the confidentiality of all the students, teachers, administrative staff and volunteers that I work with and/or observe. Under no circumstances should the personal issues (behavioral, social, and/or academic) of children and staff members be discussed with anyone except the appropriate staff members in a proper setting.
✓ I agree to observe the NO recording, filming or photographing of any virtual/online sessions that I participate in with students or staff.
✓ I agree to follow the rules and procedures for the area for which I am volunteering.
✓ In the event of behavior requiring disciplinary action, I agree to speak with the child's teacher to explain the behavior so the teacher can handle the situation.
✓ I am required, while acting in a volunteer capacity, to report to the appropriate authority and the principal if I know of or reasonably suspect a student’s health or welfare has been or appears to have been harmed as a result of abuse or neglect.
✓ As a volunteer, I am here because I care about the children of this school and want to help in the educational capacity I have chosen.
