PTA Board looking for Volunteers

Your Short Pump Middle School PTA Board is looking for volunteers wanting to make a difference in our school.  Being part of the PTA Board will fit into your already busy schedule, it is truly manageable.  The PTA Board meets once a month and you spend 2 – 3 hours a month working in your area of focus.  Although the time commitment is less than you might expect, the PTA’s impact on the school is huge.  If you have wanted to get involved with your child’s school, now is the time to act!  Come share your ability to organize, motivate and be creative or if you want to further develop those skills – now is your opportunity.

The mission of our PTA is to help create the absolute best learning environment for our faculty and students.  This is accomplished through a wide range of PTA service offerings –

  • Coordinating volunteers
  • Hosting student and staff hospitality events
  • Coordinating enrichment programs
  • Coordinating Reflections program
  • Managing the new SPMS Dr. Chamberlain Scholarship
  • Managing school spirit wear sales and bookstore
  • County Council of PTA Delegates
  • County Lay Advisory Delegates
  • Ensuring our continued support through membership and fund raising

For the 2015 – 2016 school year the following PTA Board positions will be open for appointment:

  • Bookstore Co- Chair
  • Scholarship Co-Chair
  • County Council Delegate

Elections and appointments will be completed in May 2015; however it is important to act immediately.  We have formed a Nomination Committee to help identify candidates for the open roles.  If you would like to make a significant positive impact in your child’s school in a manageable volunteer role, I encourage you to become part of your SPMS PTA Board.  Please reach out to any member of our Nomination Committee:

I have truly enjoyed serving as the SPMS PTA President these past 2 years.  We as a community are very lucky to have such an outstanding middle school.  Much of our school’s success can be attributed to our caring and involved parent volunteers that give of themselves regularly.  Thank you to everyone that has given their time to make our children’s time at Short Pump Middle School so very special.

Thank you, I look forward to volunteering with you next year -

Steve Richter, Short Pump Middle School PTA President – 2013 – 2015

The SPMS PTA Establishes the Dr. Mark E. Chamberlain Scholarship

The PTA is proud to present the Dr. Mark E. Chamberlain Scholarship.  The scholarship was established in 2014 to honor Dr. Chamberlain’s long term commitment to Short Pump Middle School.  Each year, the PTA will award two scholarships to former Short Pump Middle Students in the amount of $500 each.

Please click on the tab above labeled the Dr. Mark E. Chamberlain Scholarship to get more details and the necessary information on how a student may apply.

Congratulations to all SPMS artists who submitted an entry to the 2014-2015 Reflections Program!

Thanks to all the students for their entries to The Reflections Program, and to the school  administration for supporting and recognizing their efforts.  Please look under the Reflections Tab at the top to see a list of winners as well as the theme for the 2015-2016 school year. It is always impressive to see what the students create in the various art forms included in this competition!

Update to PTA Membership Drive:

The PTA has completed its membership and direct donation drive.  Membership cards are available in the main office if you have not already received one.  We are pleased to announce that we have 595 members and have raised close to $15,000 through our direct donation campaign this year.  Thank you to all of you for supporting SPMS!  Your donations will be put to good use as the PTA has many special events planned for our students and staff throughout the year.  The PTA hosts student events including the 8th Grade Dance, the 7th Grade Social, and 6th Grade Orientation.  We also help keep our students organized by purchasing the Student Agendas which are provided to them each year.  Also your generous donations, through the Direct Donation Campaign, help to make tangible improvements to the campus each year. In addition PTA funds will support the newly established Dr. Chamberlain scholarship which will be awarded to a former SPMS student each year.

A list of silver and gold level PTA donors can be found on the 2014-2015 Gold & Silver Level Donors Tab above.

Interested in joining the Short Pump Middle School PTA:

The membership fee is $6 per adult, however we ask you to also consider making a Direct Donation in the amount of $35 per student or $50 per family.  Or consider becoming a Silver Puma ($75) or Golden Puma ($100) to receive a silver or gold window sticker and be recognized as a SPMS supporter on the PTA website.  You can make this contribution all on one form.

Short Pump Middle School and Henrico County News:

The PTA has truly enjoyed working with Principal Thomas H. McAuley who joined us most recently from Holman Middle School. We have enjoyed hearing about and offering support for his new initiatives at SPMS and share his enthusiasm for making SPMS a great place for students to attend!

The HCPS has implemented a 10-point grading scale in the 2014-15 school year.  You can access more information regarding frequently asked questions regarding this new scale at http://henrico.k12.va.us/instruction/GradingPractices.html.
